He was the counterpart of Henri Christophe in the South which was at the time a privilege to be in charge of the better part of the country given that the South was already prosperous. Petion was only a president, not a king.

Caonabo, King Cacique of the province of Ciguayos (Cayabo or Maguana), killed all the Spanish Settlers at La Navidad who perpetrated many horrors on the locals. Caonabo led a band which crossed into the province of Maden and killed all the sailors. He then became the rallying point to the Spanish resistance, and, as a result, Caonabo was lured into a fake peace-making by Columbus. He trapped himself into fake gift ornaments that were handcuffs offered to him by the Spaniard Ojeda and taken away.

Vertieres, La Butte Charrier

November 18, 1803 La “Bataille de Vertieres Sur La Butte Charrier”
This piece of work is the battle scene of the fight at Vertieres

At Vertieres, the Haitians fought the last major battle against the French expeditionary forces. This blow was a major loss for France and its colonial empire. This revolution was led by Jean-Jacques Dessalines and Francois Capois, nicknamed “Capois Lamort”.

Vertieres was a French-held fort near Cap Francois. In an attempt to reinstitute slavery as had been the case in other Caribbean possessions, and to stop the Haitian Revolution, Napoleon Bonaparte sent his troops to march on fort Vertieres where the French were defeated in big numbers. The French were led by General Rochambeau. This defeat forced the French to abandon their stronghold.
